It’s reasonable to be a little skeptical, or at least cautious, when taking a CBD supplement for the first time – especially if it’s a concentrated extract. If you haven’t consulted your doctor or at least skimmed some authoritative sources to get your CBD dosage just right, you’re liable to over-analyze. That said, it is still important to use the proper CBD oil dosage so you can gain the most benefit. The following tips will help you determine the CBD oil dosage that’s right for you.

RDI and CBD Oil Dosage
As it stands, the FDA has not set an RDI (recommended daily intake) for any CBD supplement. This is likely because of several factors, including legalization debates, the many forms of CBD available, and the number of symptoms it may help.
Almost every CBD company will provide dosage information on their products, but these are suggestions because there is no FDA recommended CBD oil dosage.
CBD Concentration and dosage
Comparing the concentrations of different CBD brands can be a challenge. One brand may sell a 33.3mg/ml CBD tincture; another may prefer to show the total number of milligrams on the bottle. Some will use other units of measure, such as ounces. Here are suggestions that may help:
- Find a CBD supplement that measures the recommended dose in drops or droppers (five drops, half a dropper, etc).
- If you have something that measures milliliters, go for the lower end of the CBD supplement’s recommended dosage range.
- If you can’t find a CBD dosage recommendation on the product itself, just take 25 milligrams – it’s a tiny dose that you can build on.
CBD Oil Dosage and Formulation
Several formulation options exist in terms of how you can take CBD: edibles, oils, creams, roll-ons, capsules, vapes, etc.
Oral ingestion takes longer to work than vaping, but the effects of oral ingestion typically last longer. Many CBD supplement users who prefer using CBD orally take it once in the morning and once at night. As always, if it’s your first time, start with the lowest dose.
A special note about vaping CBD: it works almost instantly, which could be a potential issue for a new user. Since the effects of smoking CBD supplements last about half as long as the edible route, you could try smaller doses more frequently. Of note, I have concerns about vaping so do not take the information provided as a recommendation to vape CBD or anything else.
Creams are nice when you have a particular problem area, such as tight neck or back muscles. Topical products bypass the liver to work directly at the application site, so there is little to no potential for CBD interactions. Determining the best CBD dosage, however, can be nearly impossible. It’s very cumbersome to measure the amount of cream applied, and many factors (like hair, body mass, the temperature of your skin, and so forth) can affect the power and duration of CBD cream’s effects. Adjust according to your results. But much like vitamin B12, you can’t really “overdose” on CBD.
Know Your Objectives
Why are you taking CBD in the first place? What is the intended effect of the supplement? This is important when deciding your dose. For example, the CBD oil dosage for anxiety may not be the same as the dosage for pain.
Consider the following scenarios:
You have a sprained ankle: If you want to use CBD for inflammation and pain control to avoid prescription medication, you may need a medium-large dose of CBD to experience quick relief. You may consider a cream-based CBD supplement in this case. If the sprain is moderate to severe, you need to see a physician. (To heal properly, you may require immobilization with a boot.)
You have osteoarthritis: You really don’t want to take opioids, and long-term use of Tylenol, Ibuprofen, and other pain-relievers/anti-inflammatories might cause unintended harmful effects. Since OA is a chronic condition, you can take your time getting your CBD dosage just right. You can start with small doses and experiment with the timing and dose. Since OA typically affects multiple joints across the body, it may be best to use CBD oil along with a topical cream for the most painful areas.
Age and CBD Oil Dosage
A fairly recent study highlighted some interesting points concerning the differences in cannabinoid uses between “old mice” who were experiencing cognitive decline and young mice. In the study, the mice treated with cannabinoids showed significant improvements in their cognitive function. The researchers likened them to healthier and younger mice after being treated. The “neuroprotective” effect against diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia was clear here, but the study made another point: younger mice reacted differently to the cannabinoids.
So it’s at least worth considering that aging can alter how our brains react to cannabinoids.
Weight and CBD Oil Dosage
Your weight may impact your ideal CBD oil dosage, but it’s not that simple. Your medical conditions, experience with cannabinoids, age and fitness level, and so many other factors can throw this equation off. But it never hurts to get some sense of how weight can affect dose.
That being said, six milligrams of CBD for every 20 pounds of body weight is an appropriate dose to begin with. If you weigh 140 pounds, you could start at about 42 milligrams per dose. A 200-pound individual can try 60 milligrams, and so forth. If you’re nervous about your first CBD dosage, or if you aren’t heavily symptomatic in terms of pain, inflammation, etc., you can start at three milligrams per 20 pounds. If you really need relief and don’t feel intimidated by the higher doses, you can take up to ten or twelve milligrams per 20 pounds. Just know that with higher CBD dosages, you may experience up to a five-point drop in blood pressure and you will probably feel much more calm (or sleepy).
When determining CBD dosage, go down the checklist of factors that could influence how much your body needs, including your age, your weight, what you want to treat, and how comfortable or hesitant you are with trying CBD if this is your first time. If you feel comfortable following a product label, go for it. Adjust subsequent doses as needed and as tolerated.
